Weird animal facts
If you shave most mammals, the skin under the fur has the same pattern, and nearly the colour, as the fur.

Except for primates.

No-one knows why.

I could get you a reference for this, but I can't be arsed.

Norway tips -

I think it depends on the species of penguin. The Gentoo pisses like a horse according to this article - https://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/adventure-blog/2016/03/25/penguins-antarctica-danco-island.

They also shit like one too, apparently, but unlike ours is full of nutrients.

A spoonful of penguin pooh anyone?

Although we aren't the world's best endurance runners at all temperatures, we are the best at higher temperatures.

Most quadrupeds can gallop faster than we can run, but galloping interferes with their main cooling mechanism, panting, so they overheat if they gallop too long.

On the other hand, we CAN (if fit) run faster than quadrupeds' trotting pace, which eanbles them to pant.

So the original human hunting strategy was this: we chase an animal, and force it into galloping, and it outpaces us, gets away, but overheats and has to rest.

While it is recovering, we track it and walk after it, and catch up with it, before it has fully recovered. We then repeat the exercise, until the prey collapses with heat exhaustion. Sometimes it dies even before the coup de grace.

One of the reasons we could do this is because our main cooling mechanism is sweating.

We really were "born to run", although I much prefer to do so in a football match.

In the 1920s and 1930s, they forced dogs to run on a treadmill until they died. Fuck knows what for ("let's do this NOW, before animal welfare becomes a concern...").

They did about 100km a day.

Some humans can do this, without dying, AND no-one forces them to do it.

(Some of) us are definitively weird.

Alfa. Amusing, but totally untrue. Penguins do not urinate. The excrete a pale/white paste, which contains very little water.

Clown fish change sex as they gey get older.
They all start female and as they get older they change sex to male so the surviving ones carry on the gene pool.
It works for them.

Re: Weird animal sex
Pathenogenesis, reproduction without mates, is quite common amongst reptiles and fish.

Offspring are simply clones of their mothers. And there are no males among the species which only reproduce in this way.

But the Amazonian mollie, which is a live bearer, reproduces via parthogenesis with a twist. Eggs need to be penetrated by sperm in order to start developing, even though the sperm's genetic material is immediately ejected.

But if there are no males, where does the sperm come from?

Amazonian mollies "borrow" the males of a related species, the sailfin molly.

American Turkeys have two different types of male.

The males in a clutch all meet up and have an epic battle. The winner becomes the dominant one and several genetic switches operate to make sure he looks more male than his brothers thereafter. They help him to get his end away, as females are attracted to males with many subordinate brothers. But they don't try to mate with the females themselves.

If the dominant male kicks the bucket, his remaining brothers have another battle to determine a new dominant one.

Occelated wrasse have three types of male.

Territorial males have more extravagant coloration and build nests. A territorial male has several satellite males, who help maintain the nest and its surroundings, and the territorial male lets them have a go on the eggs laid by any female who has been attracted by his beauty and well-kept nest, after he's had a go himself, naturally.

Sneaker males don't help at all, but dive bomb the nest with spunk, against the resistance of the territorial male.

Tardigrdes are even harder than honey badgers. All mustelids are to be reckoned with in the mammal world but have nothing on what tartigrades can put up with.
Scorpions are also set up to withstand all sorts of stuff. There is a reason they have survived for hundreds of million of years. Ditto Dragonflies, they are stupidly old creatures but still the most efficient and voracious hunters in the insect world.

Re: Weird animal facts
It's quite interesting, if a little out of date - isotopic analyses have confirmed that Homo species ate considerably more meat than Australopithecines.

Cooking as an alternative explanation for our evident access to high available energy sources doesn't seem to have any evidence that early. (Bearing in mind that absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence)
